Take a coloring page and turn it into a paper bag puppet activity. I do this with my autism classes (teacher and aides need to help with this), we all sit at a large table (4-8 kids), I only use 3 colors, everyone has to wait until the crayon is passed to them (waiting skills), I color first, “I’m coloring the face green. What color am I coloring the face?” then I pass the crayon to Dylan, “Dylan’s coloring the face green. Who’s coloring the face green?” Then Dylan passes it to the person next to him, “Who are you passing the green crayon to?” During this time, the rest of the kids need to be paying attention (listening skills), and waiting until the crayon is passed to them; then follow the directions. As this is happening, I’m starting with the second color. You can do this with a coloring activity only or the puppet with glue and googley eyes too. Can you see how many skills this simple activity can target? Most teachers give students a bucket of crayons so they can free color, not realizing if they put a spin on it, they can turn this into a goal targeting activity. The first time I did this with my teachers (several years ago), they were shocked at how many language skills this was building. They loved it. This is great to do with a rainbow picture too. Happy Halloween! Monae 🙂
