Music is an important part of my therapy sessions. I love using music during whole group/circle time. Kids love it and it is great for imitating and receptive/expressive language. I have a large selection of songs that I use throughout the year and I have several favorites that I couldn’t live without. Laurie Berkner is one of them. Her music is fun, fun, fun and my students LOVE hearing their favorites throughout the school year. I tend to pair up specific songs with specific books of mine and that keeps a 30 – 45 minute therapy session interesting, fun, engaging, and NOT BORING! Below is a list of songs from her Best of Laurie Berkner Band. My three favorite are Rocketship Run, Five Days Old, and The Goldfish… And my students LOVE these as well.

Often I will make pieces from the song and attach (with velcro) to a wooden stick/ruler/paint stir stick so the students can come up, prior to the song, and make choices then hold their piece up when appropriate during specific parts of the song. For instance I would have moons, stars, suns, and earths attatched to sticks for the Rocketship Run song… you can ask your local paint store/Home Depot/Lowes for a few extra wooden paint sticks for free everytime you are in one of those stores. It doesn’t take long to collect 10-15 sticks that can be re-used over and over throughout the year. 🙂
