Often, as parents, we do more for our children than we need to do. If we want to teach them life skills, we need to let them do more for themselves. It might seem easier and quicker to do it all for them but one day, your four year old will be 12 or 15 years old. They need to learn these skills early, so they can become more independent as they get older. Let them feed themselves (even if it’s a little messier), let them dress themselves (even if the buttons are crooked), and let them help with chores (even if it’s not done to your standard). By doing this, you will be teaching your child the skills he or she will need as they get older. And always remember to be good to you. Being a parent is a hard job and being a parent of a child on the spectrum or with any disability is even harder. So don’t forget to pat yourself on the back once in awhile. <3
